Project Overview

The source of Brunswick County’s Northwest Water Treatment Plant (NWTP), Cape Fear River, was found to be contaminated with perfluoro-2-propoxypropanoic acid.

The NWTP Expansion and Upgrades (Phase 3) began construction in June 2020, to increase the plant’s capacity as well as implement low-pressure reverse osmosis to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

A low-pressure reverse osmosis system was selected following a study by CDM Smith, which compared an array of tech­nolo­gies at the desktop level, including granular activated carbon (GAC), ion-exchange resin (IX),
low-pressure reverse osmosis (LPRO), ozone/biofil­tra­tion and ultraviolet advanced oxidation (UV-AOP).

BW Water was appointed for the fabrication, assembly, supply and delivery of a complete reverse osmosis system.
